E taakiri tuu ana ki ngaa kupu a Kiingi Taawhiao e kii mai ana, ‘Maaku anoo tooku nei whare e hanga’.
The prophetic words of King Taawhiao are as relevant today as they were in his time ‘I shall fashion my own house’. This is our home, we bid you welcome.
We join with Kiingi Tuheitia in saying, our people, our river and our mountains are ready to host you. A passage from scripture states ‘in the spirit is not in the building of a house, the house is wasteful’. Come near oh pillars of the house of thoughtful resolve. Come near and rest awhile. For together we can fashion a house of which we will be proud. Paimaarire ki a taatou katoa.

Tuurangawaewae marae at Ngaaruawaahia is the seat of the Maaori King movement, which developed in the 1850s to unify Maaori and protect their land. Tuurangawaewae – literally ‘a place to stand’ – was built in the 1920s under the direction of Te Puea Heerangi, granddaughter of the second Maaori king.
